"Decadent Light" by Evolve iv is a deep, hard-hitting progressive/alternative rock CD. This album doesn't hold back the talent of the guitarists at all. The riffs and chords of the guitars and bass, combined with the laid back but heavy lead vocals, mixed with the cool drum tempos, show musicianship working at its best. The CD covers a range of musical influences from various genres, but fully maintains the essence of solid progressive rock. "Listen Up" will have the listener nodding their head as they mentally try to follow the tricky, melodic guitar and catchy lyrics. Track 7, "Must Have Been The Future" displays the versatility of the lead vocals by having a slight country "twang" blended with hard rock. Among the other tracks, "Voyager" and "Write" are plain examples of the pure talent that this band has. The tracks on this CD can and will have fans of Nirvana, Skynyrd, as well as Coldplay fully satisfied.

Media Line Road mix '60's and '70's-era pop-rock sensibilities with kaleidoscopic flair on their fine new CD, "Sagittarius Passing Through." Recalling classic rock bands such as Pink Floyd ("We're Not From Here"), The Doors ("I've Been Trying"), Moody Blues ("Fly"), and especially, the solo work of George Harrison, the 14-track collection features the kind of echo-y psychedelic effects that defined a lost era of Rock. CD-opener, "Old Belle's Bop," a tremolo-laden pop song with tasty slide licks, boasts more than a hint of George Harrison-like Top 40 charm, while "It's Kinda Creepy Baby" sounds like a demented carnival nightmare (check out the backward guitar overdubs). Re-visiting the Harrison reference, "Prayer" is a spiritual ballad with some excellent interplay between slide and mandolin, and "Good To Have You Back Again" exudes the polished pop of Harrison's work with Jeff Lynne. All told, Media Line Road's "Sagittarius Passing Through" CD is a potent and winning blend of classic and psychedelic rock influences that touches all the right bases.

Like his brilliant fellow Aussie singer-songwriter, Paul Kelly, Gorrie's originality is borne out over 13 rock / folk-rock songs that are as meaningful as they are satisfying. With their 10th studio album, titled "Free Your Mind", the roots-rockers of Too Slim and the Taildraggers deliver an album deserving of a broader recognition than the semi-legendary regional status the band has garnered as a live-circuit fixture in their area. Leader Tim "Too Slim" Langford has mixed classic rock with R&B sensibilities as the Taildraggers more than ably provide a powerhouse ensemble backing on the 11 original compositions. Setting the tone with both his raspy vocals and fiery guitar work, Too Slim exhorts redemption on the slow rocker "Peace With the Maker," does battle with his demons on the blues-rock stomp of "Been Through Hell," and mines the depths of the times on the charged, minor-key gem, "Last Train." With the help of a talented trio of female singers, "Free Your Mind," while relying on a roots-rock vernacular, otherwise transcends easy categorization. The accoutrements are classic guitar-stoked rock, but the individual songs make this album less a product of a genre or type than a fully-realized rock statement. For a band whose recording career spans almost 20 years, it is no less accomplished than what you would expect, and the grit & polish of Too Slim & the Taildraggers' "Free your Mind" will be enjoyed by fans of Tom Petty and ZZ Top.

Classic power-trio rock driven by the kind of fiery and blistering guitar flourishes that defines the genre is the order of the day on The Leftovers fine new CD, "Reheat and Serve." Alternately flashing the kind of licks a fan of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, or Stevie Ray Vaughan would drool over, veteran rocker D. Logan Foster leads a 3-piece band through a 9-song workout of blues fire and rock dynamics with drama and flair. With wife Cassandra Roxanne (Bass) and Bennie Bee (drums) proving a rock-solid and inventive rhythm section, classic blues rock gets a makeover on the Santana-inflected "Simple Woman" while the Southern chug of "Your Eyes Give You Away" are right out of the Lynyrd Skynyrd playbook. CD-opener, "Let's Do It Again" surges with a Hendrix-like fury as Foster's slashing chops cuts through the song like lightning bolts. But in the best of power-trio traditions (e.g., Cream, Hendrix Experience, Blue Cheer), sheer sonic power is often tempered in service of the song, as on the closer, "Mississippi Blues," a blues shuffle that features Foster's earthy and down-home vocals to best effect. Classic by design and execution, The Leftovers CD, "Reheat and Serve" is anything but warmed-over: instead, it's a vibrant and charged tasting of blues-rock that will always have a place on the classic rock menu.

Originally released in 1976, "Red Letter Day" by Tom Lucas is a CD packed with the truest form of American Rock. Lucas' lyrics deal with the never-ending political issues of our time and don't hold back on his sentiments. Close your eyes and listen to Lucas' vocals as they are pure, crisp, and simple, whereas you might even think you are hearing Neil Young. "Babylon Rising" is piano-driven with an energetic Blues/Rock tonality. The original album contained nine tracks, but the addition of a new track, "Stars In The Night," gives the listeners a taste of nice harmonies and moving beats. The ballad-like song, "Days Numbered," displays emotive vocals and laid-back piano interplay. The entire collection of music on this album is straightforward and well-produced. What follows is a further 14-track exploration of rock styles fused by spot-on instincts and flashes of potent song craft. Built on a classic rock attitude of tuneful and engaging hooks, "Elliptical Motion" is jam packed with songs of raw intensity such as "Luck Runnin' Out," or "Release The Peace" and soulful balladry of "If Ever" or "Hide Away," as well as radio-ready fare defying the constraints of categorization "Don't Hold Back," and "Ebony Eyes." "Countin' On You" features some fine Southside Johnny-style harp licks, while "Starting Over" sways with a mean Clarence Clemons-style tenor sax part that's both gritty and urbane. Heartscore's latest CD, "Touch Me," an inventive, adventurous, and – at times, bold, blend of modern rock styles, is both flamboyant and heady, a mixture as explosive as it is effective. Trading off Zappa-like song-shifts, sweeping dramatics worthy of Queen, or Progressive rock evocations reminiscent of Be-Bop Deluxe and /or Yes, "Touch Me" finds German multi-instrumentalist Dirk Radloff exploring rock's cerebral corners to produce a work that's both unusual and accessible. And while modernist and intellectual in its idiosyncrasy, tracks like "I'm Running" and the pretty, "You Are So Beautiful" attest to Heartscore's ability to neatly meld untamed and provocative arrangements with tunes that are fine and tuneful. Elsewhere, angular and abrasive torrents of sound make originals like "Never Leave the Highway" and lead song, "I Did It" into gems of propulsive dissonance. With Radloff's affected and stylized vocal delivery filling in the blanks, and smart synthesizer fills supplementing a guitar-bass-drum core, Heartscore's "Touch Me" CD is a triumph of substance and style sure to appeal to fans of progressive and original rock.

Tom Petty once proudly sang about the southern accent where he came from. Well, despite Kid Goat's eastern (DC & PA) origins, that accent imbues everything about Kid Goat's excellent "These People Aren't You" CD, an exploration of roots and alternative country-leaning rock that adds up to Americana at its finest. With Matt Aquiline and Belen Pifel trading off lead singing duties, Kid Goat strikes a nifty balance over 13 guitar-driven songs that alternately rock, swing, and sway. A jangle guitar underpins the hook-filled opener, "Must Be Blind," as the duo harmonize in the best southern tradition, while on "From You," Pifel's delicate country-tinged voice, which is reminiscent of Tift Merritt's, is the perfect vehicle for an memorable, pretty tune. Elsewhere, Aquiline's voice calls to mind the breakthrough BoDeans debut LP, with songs like "Pennsylvania" and "Working World" capturing the rawness at the heart of great rock 'n' roll. All told, "These People Aren't You" is a solid debut CD for Kid Goat; one that knocks down borders in the service of terrific Americana rock.

RadioIndy is pleased to present the archimedian pOiNt with a GrIndie Award for the CD "genre specific"

"genre specific" is a most curious title for the debut 6-song CD by, the archimedian pOiNt, because within its rocking but accessible grooves are the kind of stylistic shifts that render such labels as metal, progressive rock, thrash, or post grunge simply inadequate. Yes, "genre specific" can boast tasteful and well-executed excursions into these more or less identifiable genres, but such exclamations are carried only in service of the song, and never as superfluous window dressing. Promoting an agenda of social consciousness and global awareness, songs like "Overdrive" & "Relic" rock with fierce - and classic hard rock (think Rush, Fugazzi, System of a Down) intensity, while the mix of acoustic guitar with sampled George W. Bush speechifyin' in "Hubris" recalls nothing less than G'n'R-like grandeur. But in the languid lead vocal of "Nemesis Domesticus" an echo of Kurt Cobain gives way to the sonic charge of thundering guitar riffs that Led Zeppelin began perfecting four decades ago. All in all, the CD "genre specific" by, the archimedian pOiNt, is a very promising blast of rock bravado from an undersized behemoth (it's a 2-man group) with hard rocking roots.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Sue Quigley with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Perfect Chaos"

"Perfect Chaos," Sue Quigley's latest CD, is a polished continuation of this fine Seattle-bred singer-songwriter's exploration of traditional and classic female rock forms. This time around, though, the acoustic guitars are a little more pronounced and the rhythms less insistent, but the hooks are no less engaging and Quigley's resonant voice still squeezes every last drop of blood from her songs' intricate veins. And rich veins they are. "Fallen World" masterfully blends a syncopated rhythm to a sonorous cello in a moving bid for hope and redemption, while the melodic "Paper Tiger" languorous vocal belies the rage smoldering barely under the surface. "Picture in a Drawer" and "She's Not Talking to You" are nifty mid-tempo numbers reminiscent of female rock forebears like Johnette Napolitano, Sass Jordan, or Patty Smyth. But on the album's stripped down ballads - such as the closer, "How It's Going to Be," with it's demo-like vocal and acoustic guitar-only performance – or the moving "Yours to Say," Quigley reveals the softer edges of a fiercely independent artist to best effect. All told, "Perfect Chaos" is a terrific alternative pop/rock-oriented CD and a fine addition to Sue Quigley's growing and noteworthy canon.

Employing extremely tasteful blends of acoustic and electric fretwork throughout, "Music." highlights consist of Adult Contemporary gems that showcase styles ranging from California-style soft rock "Here & Now" to post-Eagles Don Henley pop-rock "Everything Falls Apart." Who said you can't judge a book or CD by its cover? Roy Jay's debut album "Lucky Guy" embodies the relaxed beach tone feeling depicted in his cover artwork. There are twists on this traditional upbeat folk music throughout this disc with tracks like "In and Out of Dreams" where hand-percussion and acoustic guitar are complimented by harmonious background vocals with sing along style. Although mostly leaning towards lighter atmospheres, "Time's Page," takes a ballad approach where subtlety and style come into play nicely. The musicianship is sophisticated and mature, but Jay doesn't take himself too seriously during "Prettiest Girl in Wal-Mart" with a comical trip to the super-store. Get out your sun block as "Lucky Guy" is Americana wrapped up in a beach towel and ready to hit the sand.

From the infectious opening track, "It's Just Our Way," by original and innovating artists Black Lung Bandits, they establish a coalition of genres on their album "Bandaids on Bullet Wounds." The first track kicks off with an organic four on the floor pulse, balanced with dirty guitar interjections, and baritone vocal twang. There are songs with hard syncopated rhythms and riffs such as "On the Verge of a Good Feeling" or "The Girl from Iwo Jima" later juxtaposed by a more folk-infused approach, hip-hop rhyming, and even mariachi. One such example of this creativity is "Another Place" with edgy guitars, Middle Eastern tonality, and rapping rhymes. Saying that Black Lung Bandits are eclectic would be an understatement as they have originality and pull off the diversity of these genres. "Bandaids on Bullet Wounds" is a disc well worth hearing with the unique and fresh sounds of hard core rock, a touch of folk and rhyming hip-hop.

The blues/rock band, E.Z. Riders, have released a throwback to the days of Humble Pie with their latest effort, "Experienced Zydeco Riders." Their roots are obvious, with raging Steve Marriott guitar riffs and gritty vocal tones reminiscent of early ZZ Top. "Witchy Woman" is by far the best track on the CD and is not an Eagles cover. Instead, it is an E.Z. Riders blues jaunt, filled with Lynyrd Skynyrd style slide guitar playing. That is really what this band and this disc are all about; strong and rocking guitars. If you crave more string bending guitar action, give a listen to songs like "I Should Have Quit You" and "Mean Mistreater" and you will get your fill. "Experienced Zydeco Riders" belongs in the hands of any 70's blues/rock fan.

Veteran songwriter Ric Seaberg takes listeners for a musical journey through his life and much more on "A Thousand Songs." Overall, Seaberg's songs are very reminiscent of late 70's Jackson Browne, both in his vocal approach and melodies. The Browne influence can be heard throughout the disc, but is most recognizable on "The Queen of Hollywood High" and "In My Daddy's Car." There are also some faint hints of John Lennon and Warren Zevon scattered about as well. Seaberg also touches upon the subject of divorce in songs such as "Make it About Me" and "Smiley Emoticon." His ability to write openly about his life experiences and feelings makes it very easy for any listener to attach themselves to these great songs. Any Jackson Browne or Brian Wilson fan will be spinning "A Thousand Songs" over and over again.

Finlay Morton takes a crop of classic rock influences and fuses them together with some country, resulting in a fine album called "Back to Basics 2009 Remix." Morton's songwriting is very similar to that of Tom Petty, with Americana flowing throughout the album and the sound of an organ whirling about. This influence is most evident on songs like "Hang On To Your Dreams" and "My Friend". The best attribute about Morton is his silky rock voice, emulating the more recent vocal tones of Pink Floyd's Roger Waters. Give "Scary Monsters" a good listen and you will hear those vocal tones similar to Waters'. There is also some nice country lap steel work on the song "Back To The Start". If you own Petty's "Wild Flowers" album or anything put out recently by Neil Young, you will love Finlay Morton's "Back to Basics 2009 Remix."

Looking for something new and different? Then you should give a listen to the album "The Temple of Humanity" by pop/rock band Freestone. This band emulates the cosmic tones familiarized by Pink Floyd and does a great job at reproducing those sounds. "The Ancient of Days" is a mellow song, featuring talented saxophone playing that makes the instrument sound almost as if it is singing. The title track exhibits a relaxing drum beat and equally soothing vocals. The instrumentation on this disc drips of Pink Floyd, with lush synth melodies and haunting guitar work. Although the material of Freestone's "The Temple of Humanity" is rare compared to what is "standard" today, it is a great listen for any Pink Floyd fan or ancient ritual buff and should definitely be checked out.

"Men and Flies" Martin Hagfors latest effort, is Indie songwriting at its finest. Hagfors does a fantastic job with this record both in his eloquent lyrics and in the choice instrumentation on every song. The first track off the album, "Appetite" features a beautiful staccato string arrangement and a vocal approach similar to the Indie master himself, Elliot Smith. Another great selection on "Men and Flies" is the song "Tattooed on My Eyes." This song has that element of fusing both old and new rock sounds with an end result of something between The Band and Ryan Adams. Hagfors really does an outstanding job on this CD and is a real hidden gem amongst his musical peers.

One of the standout tracks is "Back To The Baja" which features some nice lead guitar work and a bouncy groove that could be heard on any Jimmy Buffett or Traveling Wilburys album. Don't expect any classic style cowboy tunes on "Dust In Your Hands" because it's sheer rock/country entertainment.

Aussie band Roymackonkey delivers solid, '90s era rock with their newest effort "Cassandra Never Lies." After spending the summer touring the "land down under" with Wolfmother, it seems like this band is ready to spread their sound overseas and beyond. Their sound is sort of dated, but in a good way that reminds listeners of bands like Gin Blossoms or Nirvana. "The Fear" evokes that early '90s feel more than any other song on this album and has a nice R.E.M quality to it. The groove of "Chain Letter" is very solid and has that 'hit single' vibe to it. If you are looking to reminisce with the Seattle sound you used to love but want something fresh, as opposed to hunting down your old Soundgarden albums, then definitely take a listen to Roymackonkey's "Cassandra Never Lies."

Copper Vein Record's recent compilation, "No. 3', is an outstanding mix of what the label has to offer. The album is filled with the sounds of new and old and tracks of eclectic styles, including a number of tracks based around acoustic country rock. "Bloom on the Sage" by Mike LaBeau, is one of our favorite songs on the album and hits you with that Rolling Stones (a la 1964) tone. LaBeau's vocals are just as gritty and memorable as Mick Jagger's ever were. For that country feel, look no further than "Dizzy Melissa" by Keith Rintala. His songwriting and instrumentation stands out on this featured number and makes us want to hear more from this artist. Another highlight track is Music Sunday, featuring the powerful voice of Rachael Davis. "No. 3" is great for anyone who loves a CD with a refreshing variety of sounds that feature talented artists from Michigan.

The arrangements are diverse and the performances are fantastic. Listeners will also appreciate the amount of passion behind the well-delivered, well-harmonized vocals. Overall, the band's sound is very complete and the song-writing ability is not to be ignored. The album sounds great, with evident care taken in heightening the experience by making every element of the sound represented. A highlight is the opener "State Road 7." There is and undeniable Springsteen element here, as this track has a raw power to it and a great piano line, and tears off the roof with a vibrant horn section. "Blue in the Face" features some great variation in the vocal performance, tons of energy, and clever lyrics. "Shadow On the Wall" has some beautiful harmony in the vocals and is hypnotic and mellow. Vocals are strong with an attitude of sometimes edgy and emotional appeal. The harmonies are sung in a higher register and are perfectly blended as heard on "Mr. Singer" and "America." The relationship between the musicians of this group is noticeably well connected. "Burning Up" gives an example of this great musicianship with a powerful rock guitar solo and tight, solid drum beats. The style of writing on this album draws a strong inspiration from the music of Pink Floyd. "In Our Time Machine" is a solid opener, with Presley's mastery of the Hammond B3 and Mollica's bluesy lead vocals on full display. "Hey Now Mama" is a platform for Presley's abilities on the alto saxophone and Mollica's inventive grooves, and both deliver an enjoyable performance. "Veil of Tears" is another highlight, exhibiting once again Mollica's soulfoul vocals and Presley's command of the organ. "zOE'S iMAGINARY fRIEND" is the impressive alternative rock/folk debut from Denver outfit zOE'S iMAGINARY fRIEND. Accompanied by a sensual and effortlessly talented female lead vocal, ZIF's arrangements are diverse and thorough. The songs range from slower acoustic alt-folk tracks to heavy alternative rock, and incorporate, a plethora of instruments, including fuzzy wailing guitars, muted trumpet, poppy piano, and viola. The lyrics also cover a wide range of subjects, from driving trucks to snapping photos, but they all have a great storytelling quality to them that keeps the listener hanging onto every word. "zOE'S iMAGINARY fRIEND" has a raw quality great for the group's sound. "Sweetness" is an energetic, fast-paced rock song with great riffs, rocking beats, catchy lyrics, and an outstanding vocal performance. "Fisheye" aptly begins with the sound of snapping photographs then moves into a mellow drum, bass, and guitar arrangement with more great lyrics and vocals, and some excellent male backing vocals. "zOE'S iMAGINARY fRIEND" is a fantastic debut from a talented set of musicians with an admirable do-it-yourself mentality. Fans of alternative rock, alt-folk, and great female lead vocals should definitely check out this CD.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Phil Shoenfelt & Pavel Cingl with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Live At the House of Sin"

"Live At the House of Sin" is an incredible collaboration between English singer/songwriter Phil Shoenfelt and Czech violinist and guitarist Pavel Cingl. Recorded live at the Nova Sin club in Prague, this album features digs into the Shoenfelt songbook and features Shoenfelt on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, reminiscent of Iggy Pop and Nick Cave, and Cingl contributing incredible violin and electric guitar work to accompany the acoustic rhythms and give the tracks a full sound. The resulting songs have a great mix of gothic and folk, as Shoenfelt delivers intelligent and memorable lyrics of sorrow, love, life, and death. This is the type of performance best heard live, and "Live At the House of Sin" is recorded cleanly and the product sounds great. "Saviour's Day" begins with clean acoustic and violin work, then moves into a sorrowful violin progression that perfectly matches the sadness of Shoenfelt's lyrics of lost love. "Shivers Inside" features electric and acoustic guitar work, and is an incredible, slow and lyrical love song from Shoenfelt. "Hospital" is another great violin and acoustic collaboration that creates a beautiful harmonic sound and features more great lyrics from Shoenfelt. "Live At the House of Sin" is a great album, beautifully arranged, and thought-provoking from a couple of talented musicians with a lot of street cred. Fans of goth, folk, and the likes of Iggy Pop and Nick Cave should definitely pick this one up.

RadioIndy is pleased to present STEHM with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Pointing North"

"Pointing North" is an excellent live rock & roll album from San Diego outfit STEHM. These guys are all about producing fun and upbeat rock & roll music. The songs are guitar-driven, full of outstanding solos, riffs, and progressions, and accompanied by great drum and bass work. The vocals are always energetic, though the entire band contributes to the vocal performance. That said, some vocals are gritty and sound like a combination of Rush and Blind Melon; others are sheer rock & roll and sound like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Mick Jagger. "Pointing North" is a live recording and has a raw, non-studio sound, which is perfect for a band like STEHM. "Sally the Girl Dog" has a catchy guitar riff and drum accompaniment, group vocals, and humorous lyrics that accurately describe the behavior of a dog. "Don't Tell Me Anything" pleases the ears with its superb guitar work, gritty vocals, and memorable lyrics. STEHM really represents what rock & roll is all about with its impressive guitar work and upbeat, fun songs. Fans of Stone Temple Pilots and fun rock & roll music are going to want to check out this CD.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Marsiglia with a GrIndie Award for the CD "A Band In Your Dreams"

"A Band In Your Dreams" is the debut album from Pennsylvania indie rock outfit Marsiglia. Marsiglia blends bluesy riffs, blistering guitar solos, toe-tapping drum beats, and unique poppy vocals to create a great college rock sound that fuses together a number of influences. The arrangements are tight, drawing from both classic and modern rock sounds. Similarly, the vocal performance has nice variety to it, and Marsiglia as a whole can sound like Incubus, Rage Against the Machine, and Kings of Leon, as well as an array of classic rock artists. The songs are fast-paced and in-your-face, very creative, with great hooks and catchy lyrics. "A Band In Your Dreams" is well-produced and the instrumentation and vocals sound clean and balanced. "Past the Point" begins with ambience, then slowly builds into a great arrangement with excellent lead and rhythm guitar work, a nice beat, and is lyrical and catchy. "Love of the Game" and the closer, "Heavy Water," stand out as slower paced tracks with more diverse arrangements, inserting the piano and cello, respectively, into the songs to accompany the great, memorable lyrics. With "A Band In Your Dreams," Marsiglia have arrived, though with an album title as immodest as this one, the band itself may not be surprised to hear how good it actually is. Fans of classic and blues rock influenced college rock should definitely look into Marsiglia.

"Healing the Heart" is an exceptional acoustic EP filled with pop rock tunes and heartfelt ballads alike from South African singer/songwriter Boon. Boon's arrangements use solely acoustic instruments – guitar on the first five tracks, piano on the closer – and he skillfully crafts a melodic and full sound. Boon has a unique baritone male vocal ( reminiscent of Peter Murphy) with a strong, emotive delivery that helps fuel the meanings of the songs. The songs on "Healing the Heart" range from positive and promising to lonely and downtrodden lyrics that are both well-phrased and relatable. This EP is well-produced and sounds professional, many of the tracks ready to hit the airwaves. "Secret Island in the Sun" opens the album with a great in-your-face acoustic arrangement that later incorporates hand claps, whistles and catchy, imaginative lyrics with a message. "Oxygen" closes things out with a piano ballad that features an outstanding vocal delivery and great lyrics, including the chorus line "Money isn't everything, but it's the closest thing to oxygen." Overall, "Healing the Heart" is quite the impressive showing from Boon, featuring well-crafted acoustic songs, a unique vocal performance, and thought-provoking lyrics. Fans of acoustic pop rock and talented singer/songwriters, give Boon a listen.

"Seven Stars" is an energetic four-song rock EP from Norwegian singer/songwriter B. Keyler. B. Keyler brings great vocal styling to the table with an impressive range, a strong voice, and an original delivery reminiscent of KT Tunstall and the cutesy European vocals of Regina Spektor. "Seven Stars" has four great rock arrangements with melodic and rhythmic tones, nice guitar work, and solos to boot. This EP was self-produced, giving B. Keyler the freedom to perfect her sound, and she succeeds. "It's Who I Am" features a nice arrangement with great acoustic and electric layering and an excellent vocal performance in which B. Keyler is really displays a great amount of passion in her delivery. "I Wish" is a more lyrical track, but it also has a nice arrangement, slick reggae guitar work and a great Spektor-esque vocal delivery. Overall, "Seven Stars" is an impressive showing from a great female vocalist that leaves the listener eager to hear what she'll do next. Fans of rhythmic modern rock and original female vocal styling should look into B. Keyler.

"Sunlight" is the excellent full-length debut from Virginia hard rock outfit Freedom Hawk. This group is solid. Driven by powerful drum beats and excellently crafted guitar work, Freedom Hawk have composed nine exceptional hard rock tracks that dabble in metal and psychedelic and have a certain timeless quality to them. Attributing to this timelessness is the lead singer's vocal performance. His melodic high-pitched vocals are reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne with traces of Robert Plant. The songs are a lot of fun, meant to be played loud, and will immediately have you either bobbing your head or using your lap as a drum kit. "Sunlight" is well-produced, clean and ready to boom out of a pair of speakers. The title track, "Sunlight," is a fun track with a great rocking arrangement that gets your head bobbing and features some great drum and guitar work. "Going Down" is a stripped down track with a slow drum beat and minimal guitar work that displays the fantastic vocal capabilities of the lead singer. "Sunlight" takes us back to a time where making hard rock wasn't about making a lot of noise but rather about making very good music. Freedom Hawk have crafted a gem, and fans of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and classic hard rock are going to want to pick this one up.

RadioIndy is pleased to present The Catillacs with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Meow Mix"

Portland, Oregon trio The Catillacs have come with their claws out on their excellent debut album, "Meow Mix." Guitarist Richie Bean, drummer Susan Costa, and bassist George Burton performed on and produced the entire album, skillfully jumping between and combining Americana, rock, alt-country, blues, honky tonk, and surf rock genres. The entire album features nice musical layering, excellently crafted guitar solos from Bean, and great toe-tapping beats from Costa. The vocals are consistent with the genres and reminiscent of classic artists like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Neil Young, and Canned Heat, adding a certain timelessness to their sound. The lyrics vary as well, from dark lyrics about death and exacting revenge to sappy love ballads to just plain fun upbeat songs about living. The Catillacs self-produced "Meow Mix," and it sounds excellent and professionally done. "Boogaloo" is a great introductory track with a fun upbeat voodoo blues sound, a great hook, and superb guitar work. "True Love Figurine" is a Chicago blues track with a New Orleans flavor that features great storytelling lyrics and a great blues arrangement. With their dynamic musical arrangements and timeless sound, the cats and Catillacs alike will be happy to know that "Meow Mix" has delivered. Fans of Americana, blues, and classic rock should certainly pick up The Catillacs' debut.

The sound is, of course, heavily guitar driven, with thick beats, big choruses and an arena mentality. This album is a definite party package, with 13 solid speaker pumping tracks - frills and overproduction not included. There is also a subtle element of 50's rebel rock present, which supports an already angst-filled sound. The album is well produced, sounds great, and really lends itself to the "loudness" of the sound. The title track "Pictures Of You" gets the album going with a bang and really defines the Brit/Detroit rock fusion. "Gonna Feel Alright" features that 50's element and will absolutely rock your world with a huge chorus and additional support from horns, keys and organ. "Call It Blue" is a great '80s influenced pop rock album from Las Vegas' Lyric Road. Lyric Road draws their influence from a variety of groups, ranging from '60s Beatles to '70s classic rock, and '80s new wave to the post modern rock of today. Led by exceptional guitar and keyboard work, "Call It Blue" is filled with great arrangements that are at once classic, fresh, retro and "here and now." The lead vocalist is reminiscent of Elvis Costello and Ric Ocasek, which is great for their fused sound. The lyrics are great as well, offering a broad range of emotions and uplifting songs about self-awareness and feeling alive. "Call It Blue" is well-produced and sounds excellent and professional. "Woman" is a fun and moving song with a great keyboard progression, a strong vocal performance and nice backing vocals; look for a more raw and moving version at the end of the album with "Woman Take 2." "Hey Revolution Now!" is an excellent alt-country/folk rock album from Norwegian outfit Home Groan. This is the tenth release from singer/songwriter Martin Hagfors' band, and the toe-tapping Americana and folk arrangements and eclectic lyrics highlight Home Groan's musical maturity. Though occasionally coupled with an excellent female vocalist, Hagfors is the lead vocalist and, true to the fusion of genres, sounds like a mixture of Tom Petty, The Weakerthans, and Wilco. The song titles infer a certain witty humor in the lyrics and do not disappoint. Showing his musical maturity, Hagfors is capable of juxtaposing the humorous with the serious, from biting heads off of microphones to falling off a cliff at Big Sur. "Hey Revolution Now!" is well-recorded with an overall sound great for the genres. "Jfk Loved Volvos Too" is a well-composed acoustic song about Hagfors' 1961 Volvo with a humorous chorus and great male/female duo vocals. "Bring You Back With a Song" is a sadder love song and a ballad of sorts with great hopeful lyrics. The title track, "Hey Revolution Now!" follows this up with a fun political track with the group chorus, "Hey revolution now/ Make peace with the holy cow." With "Hey Revolution Now!" Home Groan has crafted an excellent, musically mature album with intelligent, memorable lyrics and wonderful backing arrangements. "Raising the Roof!" is an excellent, guitar-driven blues rock album with elements of funk, r&b, and New Orleans blues/jazz stylings from Tom Principato Band. Principato has been playing guitar for over forty years, and he shows his mastery of the instrument with unbelievable guitar work on every track. A few of the songs are instrumental, allowing Principato and his guitar to take center stage in bluesy jams accompanied by Hammond organ, great bass lines, drums, and occasional horns. Principato's vocals are reminiscent of the blues rock gods before him, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn, and his overall musicianship is just as incredible. His songwriting skills are also admirable, as he can write fun lyrics about creole queens and other New Orleans themes, or blues-oriented songs about lost love and lies. "Raising the Roof!" is well-recorded and has a clean and professional sound. "Lock and Key" introduces the album nicely with a New Orleans style track with great guitar work and horns. "Bo Bo's Groove" is a fun jam track with a great funk bass line, excellent guitar solos, and an overall grooving arrangement. Tom Principato and his backing band have delivered with astonishing guitar work, great blues jams, and a nice meshing of lyrics. "RSG-1" is the eclectic and truly original do-it-yourself debut from Random Song Generator. Random Song Generator is Neil Santos, a multi-instrumentalist that has his head around a variety of musical styles and proves it by playing all of the instruments on the album himself. The arrangements are solid and bass heavy, ranging in genre from hip-hop to pop to funk to techno to metal to folk to stoner rock. By sampling all of these genres, Santos goes against the grain and embraces every genre he finds aurally pleasing instead of limiting himself musically. The result is a mixtape of musical diversity, a Random Song Generator, which is entirely enjoyable and musically impressive. His vocals change with the genre, such as quicker deliveries similar to Beck during the "Mellow Gold" and "Odelay" days, rock ballads similar to Ryan Adams, and the distorted rock somewhere between Blur and Foo Fighters. "RSG-1" is well-produced; raw when it sounds better raw, clean when it sounds better clean, and bringing fully to life this incredibly imaginative album. "Just In Love" has a heavy rock sound with a catchy guitar line and backing bass, hip-hop deliveries on the verses and rock vocals on the chorus. "Addicted to Funk" is an impressive funk track with its splashy bass line, good use of synthesizers, and a group vocal on the chorus: "We're addicted to funk/ And we're looking to party, yeah!" With "RSG-1," Neil Santos has really put something interesting together by audibly displaying his knowledge of a variety of genres and laying down the foundation for many "RSG" releases to come. "The Black Letter" is the impressive alternative rock debut from California outfit Eve's Burden. This album is fueled by two things: firstly, an incredibly powerful vocal performance highlighted by an astounding vocal range from Sharon "Phox" Jordan, with a vocal quality like a favorable combination of Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, Amy Winehouse and Melissa Etheridge. and secondly, the awesome guitar licks throughout the album crafted by Jerry "The Matrix" Leal. There is something severely '80s about the overall sound, with keyboard, bass, and drums rounding out the backing instrumentation and creating a solid and full rock sound. The songs are quite lyrical, melodic, and catchy, with introspective and sociological lyrics. "The Black Letter" is well-produced and ready for extensive radio play. "Candy Girl" is filled with catchy lyrics, nice guitar work, and hand claps to boot. "The Fame Game" is a song about the life of a breakthrough musician that features memorable lyrics, a catchy chorus, a harmonica, and more great guitar work. "Euphoria" closes the album out with a '70s rock inspired guitar riff and a stellar vocal performance from the "Phox." "The Black Letter" is a solid debut from an up-and-coming group that you'll be sure to hear much more from in the years to come. "Skippin' Stones" by Darin Seldes is a great funky jazz/reggae album that can be compared to Van Morrison, Blues Traveler and The Dave Matthews Band. The album features excellent arrangements highlighted by powerful horns and a fantastic rhythm section. That combined with wonderful song writing ability and fantastic production value really makes this album stand out both creatively and technically. The vibe is such that it makes it a great chill album to have in the background while you drive, work or just hang out with good friends. The stand out track happens to be the title track "Skipping Stones" which sounds exactly how you would imagine. A very relaxed, chilled out melody along with soothing vocals search inside and find the child within. "Something New" is the leadoff track and blasts you right into it with a big full arrangement that is worthy of an arena. "Take A Deep Breath" touches on the reggae side of things, with a slick sound and nice work in the rhythm section. This is a great album by a talented artist. A great blend of many genres is difficult to achieve and Darin Seldes succeeds.-Ross

"Stay with me sweetheart, don't close your eyes" is an excellent and truly original Swedish Americana album from Jesper Eriksson & Wedell. A talented singer/songwriter, Eriksson places the most value in his lyrics, and delivers with attention getting, thought provoking, flowing lyrics about life and love, with a great storytelling quality to them. Eriksson's vocals are weathered and perfect for this genre. He draws from one of his main influences, Bob Dylan, and the end result is a vocal styling quite similar to Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. While the lyrics may be key, the arrangements are also solid, combining pop, rock, country, and folk to create that unique Swedish Americana sound, superbly complimenting Eriksson's great lyricism. "Stay with me sweetheart, don't close your eyes" is a low budget production, most of it recorded in Eriksson's home studio. After a year of Andreas Granath's careful mixing and producing, the album sounds great, with a slight raw quality great for the genre. "Hey Hey Hey" introduces the album nicely with an Americana track featuring great lyrics, a catchy chorus, and a solid backing arrangement. "Are We Waiting for You?" is a sweet piano ballad with pleasant dueling female and male vocals, some nice vocal layering, and more great lyrics. With "Stay with me sweetheart, don't close your eyes," Jesper Eriksson & Wedell have delivered nine solid and excellently crafted songs and proved that you don't have to spend a lot of money to make a great album. "Hits The Spot" is a fun, guitar-driven rock album from do-it-yourself musician Gregg Koval and his backing band, The Toastmen. This album is actually two seven track albums in one - "Hits The Spot" and "On Ice". The combination results in fourteen '70s rock-influenced anthems with plenty of jam sessions, guitar solos, and distortion. Combine this sound with Koval's vocal performances and the outfit as a whole creates a sound reminiscent of Joe Walsh and Dire Straits. The lyrics are fun and catchy, as Koval sings about love, parking cars, shortcuts, and winking, subjects you'll be singing along to in no time. Koval has a history of self-producing four-track recordings, so it should come as no surprise that he did the same with "Hits The Spot." That said, the album sounds great and has an endearing quality that preserves the fun sound Koval is going for. "Telekinetic" begins with a great guitar solo intro, soon after matched note for note in the bass line and has a great overall arrangement and lyrics throughout. "Passing Time" is an instrumental track with great acoustic work and layering with electric guitar, bass, and drums. "On Ice" is filled with a haunting wind effect, excellent guitar riffs, and a great catchy rhyming chorus. "Hits The Spot" is a well-crafted double album with memorable lyrics and a fun rock sound. Riviera's lyrics are strong, poetic, and often direct, offering outlooks on life in general from a down-but-not-out perspective. "Hollywood" opens with the lyrics, "Leave your old life behind, this is your new world," and the listener at once knows the direction and meaning of the song. "Save Yourself" is well-produced, and the vocals and arrangements both sound great. The title track, "Save Yourself," has good lyrics, a lo-fi arrangement, and the simple chorus, "Save yourself/From yourself/Save yourself/From yourself." "Division" features a great arrangement that is layered with a horn section and a fantastic guitar solo, while also supplying strong emotional lyrics and vocals. Riviera has created a promising debut EP that leaves the listener on the edge of their seat in anticipation of a full-length release. "Welcome to Murraysville" is a Brit punk album from Phil Murray and the Boys from Bury. Most of the album takes on the simplistic, classic punk rock sound with Ramones-style three chord progressions. However, it also incorporates the organ, hand claps and intense guitar solos that draw from pop rock, blues and rockabilly. Murray's vocals are very British and styled similarly to contemporary artist Art Brut, as well as likely influences The Ramones, The Clash, and The Smiths. PM&tBfB's lyrics are original, humorous and often about life (and "Rainy Nights") in Rotherham; their Northern England home town. "Welcome to Murraysville" is well-produced, intentionally giving the album that gritty punk rock sound of its predecessors. "Average Day" shows the band's musicianship as it opens with a great bass line that is soon after matched by the guitar. "High Visibility Packamac" is a humorous song about people who drive Jettas and play Yu-Gi-Oh. The catchy chorus says it all; "He wears a high visibility packamac/With security written on the back." "17 Stone," "I Can't Stop Eating Trees," and "Dying Turtle" are also rather hilarious, pouring memorable lyrics atop that classic punk rock sound. "Welcome to Murraysville" is a packed album that does not let up until we're all on our backs doing the "Dying Turtle." Fans of that classic Brit punk sound with a sense of humor should check out Phil Murray and the Boys from Bury.

"This is a Test" is a six-track funk EP from Solution that fuses their underlying funk sound with rock, pop, reggae and jazz. Solution is a musically sound group and shows their range by innovating their sound with each track. The lead singer has a naturally soothing voice similar to Phish vocalist Trey Anastasio, but his range will remind the listener of such bands as Wilco, Murder by Death and Primus - depending on the track. The lyrics are socially conscious, as "No Surprise" reminds the listener that "Around the world people are hungry" and asks, "Will reality just simply fall away?" "This is a Test" is well-recorded, but pushes the envelope as far as conventionality is concerned. "Hide Away" begins with a gristly, raw piano and flows into a sharp, crisp sound soon thereafter, indicating that Solution made a conscious effort to do so. "Hot Sauce" nicely fuses Solution's funk sound with jazz by incorporating jazzy flute, piano and horns with an outstanding funky bass beat. "Dig" is a fast-paced song with an overall funky beat and fast lyrics of which Les Claypool would be proud. "This is a Test" is a fun album with impressive and broad musicianship, nice vocals, and meaningful lyrics. For anyone in search of a good new funk album, here's your Solution.

Ross Royce puts it perfectly in his short, spoken word opening to "Mrs. Vain," the second track off his album "Life Worth Living" - "this is rock & roll." Royce, who creates most of the sounds that you hear on the album, spans the genre instrumentally and vocally. He seems to transform musically from track to track, ranging from the masterfully crafted piano rock sound of Ben Folds to an acoustic Bowie to a bluesy number reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughn, and finally to Floyd-esque space rock. The recording is clean, and allows each track to live up to its full potential. Ross's vocals work well in these rock and roll tracks. The highlight of the album, in our view, is the three track block of "Suzanne," "Hello People Pt. 2," and "Suzanne's Meditation." The tracks flow, each a response to the next, and give a crisp space/arena/art rock feel, thereby showcasing Ross's excellent songwriting and instrumental talent. The vocal performances remind the listener of Oingo Boingo, Thompson Twins, and Culture Club, and are great all around. The lyrics are well thought out. The production is also very good, as the songs jump right out of the speakers. Highlights include "Present State of Affairs," which has some great vocal work, nice accents, and a classic use of political terms in a fun way, which was quite popular amongst 80's artists. "Crashing Drums" features a driving rhythm and an unconventional harmony in the chorus. "Adrenaline Drum (It's What Drives You)" wraps things up nicely with cool percussion and another nice hook. Don't try to predict what is coming next because it's not going to happen. It is also refreshing to hear an instrumental artist who has a great sense of musical mood to compliment their raw ability. The quality of production is very good and the band behind Eric really compliments him well. Highlights include "The Flu," with a killer lick, fat beat, rolling bass line and overall guitar awesomeness. "Guthrie" features some of Eric's best soloing and is backed by some quirky jazz elements. "Broken Angel " closes things out and will take you back to the classic metal days. "Nostalgia" is a rock album with elements of jazz, funk, zydeco, and reggae from the innovative Darin Seldes. On "Nostalgia" Seldes combines atypical rock instruments – Spanish guitar, organ, horns, mandolin, and piano – with typical instruments to create an original sound. His vocals are also quite unique, accentuated and raspy with an impressive range, comparable to Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini. The clarity and quality of the production of the album allows the outstanding individual instrumental work to cut through the recording clearly and precisely. The lyrics on "Nostalgia" are oftentimes catchy and playful, though the album as a whole recognizes the difficulties of living in this imperfect world. "Long Awaited Ditty" features a playful and catchy bridge, "This is the section of the song for those who like to sing along." "Crawfish and Boiled Shrimp" is similarly playful as Seldes sings about eating seafood and attending outdoor festivities. Lyrically, "Lonely Incorporated," as one might suspect, is not quite as playful, but the instrumental combination of piano, Spanish guitar, drums, and an electric solo is quite the jam. "Nostalgia" is a true original for fans of a jazzy, funky or reggae-infused rock sound. If you enjoy rock or any of these combined genres, you'll enjoy this excellent CD.

These guys have been around for a while and it shows in their tight and polished sound. They write great songs - plain and simple. The arrangements are interesting and thoroughly developed. The lead vocals are perfect for the sound, and the backups are smooth and delicate. This is a totally professional album full of radio-ready songs. Highlights include "China Town," a song that features interesting and unexpected changes. The track is very well-layered, as well. The title track "Road Through Independence" features a delicate piano line, a jazz-infused bass and a heartwarming vocal performance. "City Girls" brings out the honky tonk a bit, and is a sure sing-along. If you enjoy piano-based adult rock, you'll enjoy this outstanding CD.

The overall sound is a breath of fresh air as Luke brings you real songs without a lot of trickery. You get catchy, melodic compositions and true to life lyrics. The album also sounds really good and Luke's vocals are balanced well with the accompaniment. Highlights include "Pearson Street" with a standout vocal performance and lovely subtle backups from female guest. "Ferris Wheel Beautiful" is a very cinematic number with a nice fiddle line and touching lyrics. "November" features a little banjo and a memorable chorus. If you enjoy outstanding adult pop/rock singer/songwriters, you'll enjoy this outstanding CD.

"The Hurricane Waltz" is an impressive instrumental guitar album featuring the Southern and modern style of the talented Guy Lee. The guitar work is amazing on this album - riffs and solos galore. You can't ignore the great rhythm section behind Guy though. The band is tight and the backing arrangements are very active. Having those guys behind him gives Guy the ability to cut loose, and he delivers. It isn't all power though. There are some great melodic downbeat numbers as well as a variation in guitar styles. You get a full menu with Guy and quality-wise, the album sounds great. Highlights are the opener "Sirocco" with a great mix of Southern and modern guitar styles. The band is at its best too, with tight rhythms and fills. "Flash Cash" is a quirky little Rag with one of Guy's best performances, some cool fiddle and offbeat changes. The title track "The Hurricane Waltz" wraps things up and features wicked jazz lines and an "authentic to the era" sound quality. If you enjoy listening to the talents of guitar virtuosos, you'll enjoy the outstanding guitar work and overall musicianship of this excellent and creative CD.

"4th St." by Booze Monkey is a guitar-driven blues rock album with a sense of humor and a party mentality. The lyrics are quirky, creative and entertaining to say the least. Not only that, these guys are good musicians that can play the blues. The man behind the sound is seasoned independent recording artist Blue Ajay. There is a definite rockabilly undertone to the sound. That mixed with the chunky/chewey guitar makes for a driving and powerful rock n' roll cocktail. You will also experience a very well-produced album with modern sounds and eclectic intricacies. This ain't your mom and pop's blues. Highlights include "Solitare (the old way)" with it's lyrical roller coaster and booming rockabilly sound. A definite party starter. "Hope" is the track that follows and is a complete 360. A darkness emerges with synths, haunting guitar work and goth-ish vocals. "Tellin' You" is a twisted rocker with great changes and fantastic performances all around. If you enjoy blues rock, you'll enjoy this excellent CD.

"Edge of the World" by Jay Stapley is an intelligent guitar driven, adult rock album brought to you by a talented veteran musician. Jay's style can best be described as Clapton meets Pink Floyd. His musicianship is superior and his lyrics are very true to life. The arrangements are full, well layered and the songs are radio-ready as far as quality is concerned. Bottom line is that there is a lot of talent present on this album and it translates into memorable songs. It's also nice to hear a "classic" sound perfected in the digital age. Highlights include the title track "Edge of the World," which opens the album and draws you right in with a haunting guitar riff and intimate lyrics. "I am a Child Again" features some cool guitar harmonics and delays along with poetic lyrics. "Deep Blue Sea" certainly has an oceanic feel to it and features some nice piano work. If you enjoy guitar-driven adult rock music, you'll enjoy this excellent CD.
